Scooter Helmets
A helmet should always be worn when riding a scooter. A scooter helmet will protect the head in case of a fall or other accident. Scooter helmets can prevent serious injury to the head and/or brain. Riding a scooter without a helmet is a careless risk that can have serious consequences. Parents should make sure their children understand the risk of not wearing a helmet. Both adults and children need to wear helmets.
Scooter helmet vs. bike helmets
A scooter helmet is very different from that of a soft-foam bike helmet. Scooter helmets are made to protect against injury from hard impact falls on asphalt and curbs. Most scooter helmets have a moldable inside that will mold to your head after a few wears. Most bicycle helmets do not have the protection that is needed for the type of falls that can occur from a scooter.
Choosing a scooter helmet
Always choose a helmet that is certified by the CPSC, ASTM or Snell. A helmet should be worn correctly on the head and strapped in place while riding on the scooter. The helmet should be worn on top of the head and not tilted on the back of the head. Nothing should be worn underneath the helmet so that is fits securely and properly. Make sure the helmet is specifically designed for use on a scooter.
